# GTA 6 Beginner's Guide

An honest GTA 6 beginner's guide: nobody has played it, so here is what you can really prepare, plus the Grand Theft Auto systems stable enough to expect.

**Confidence tier for this page:** Speculation (`speculation`) — Our analysis or a community theory. Not a fact.

Nobody has played GTA 6, so nobody can tell you how to play it. What we can do is explain what the series expects of you and what is worth doing before 19 November.

## The short answer

**GTA 6 is not out, so no genuine beginner’s guide to it can exist yet.** Any page currently telling you “10 tips for GTA 6 beginners” is describing a game its author has not played. We are not going to do that.

What is honestly useful today falls into two buckets: the small number of things you can actually prepare before launch, and the Grand Theft Auto systems that have been consistent enough across the series that expecting them is reasonable. Both are below, clearly separated, and the second is labelled precedent because that is what it is.

## If GTA 6 is your first Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is an open-world crime series. You control a criminal protagonist in a large, continuous, fictionalised American city, drive anything you can get into, and progress a scripted story by taking on missions — while the world carries on around you whether or not you engage with it. Roughly half of the appeal is the story; the other half is what you do between missions.

GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, a fictionalised Florida centred on Vice City, and follows two protagonists, Lucia and Jason. You do not need to have played any previous game to follow it. The series reuses its setting names and its satirical universe, but each mainline entry tells a self-contained story.

## What you can genuinely do before launch

1. **Sort out storage early.** Rockstar open-world games are among the largest installs on any console. Whatever the final figure, clearing space in November while the download is queued is worse than clearing it in September. Current preload and file-size reporting lives on our [news desk](https://gta6intelhub.com/news), dated and sourced.
2. **Preload the moment it unlocks, not on launch morning.** Every large launch produces the same pattern: the CDN is fine a week out and painful in the final twelve hours.
3. **Decide platform deliberately.** GTA 6 is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. A PC version has not been announced. If you are a PC player weighing whether to buy a console for it, note that GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both reached PC substantially after their console launches — that is precedent about Rockstar’s habits, not a commitment about GTA 6.
4. **Play GTA 5 if you want a warm-up, but not for the story.** The transferable part is the feel: how the wanted system pressures you, how missions are structured, how driving handles. None of the plot carries over.
5. **Stop reading leaks if you care about the story.** The material that circulates in the final weeks before a Rockstar launch is a mix of fabrication and genuine spoilers, and you cannot tell which is which until it is too late.

## Series systems worth understanding — GTA 5 precedent

Everything in this section describes **GTA 5**. It is here because these systems have been stable across the series and are a reasonable baseline expectation, not because any of it has been confirmed for GTA 6.

### The wanted system

Commit a crime in view of the police and you gain a wanted level, shown as stars. GTA 5 used a five-star scale — a reduction from the six stars of GTA IV and San Andreas. Each star escalates the response: at one star a single patrol car takes an interest, at five you are dealing with a sustained, coordinated pursuit. Losing the police means breaking line of sight and staying out of the search radius, which the map shows you, until the level decays. Learning to read that search radius rather than simply driving fast is the single biggest early skill gap in a GTA game.

### Saving

GTA 5 autosaved at mission boundaries and when you switched between the three protagonists, and let you save manually by sleeping in a bed at a safehouse. The practical habit worth carrying into any GTA: after anything that took effort and was not a mission — a long collectible run, an expensive purchase — go and save it deliberately rather than trusting the autosave to have caught it.

### Multiple protagonists

GTA 5 introduced switching between three playable characters on the fly, each with their own life, safehouse and special ability. GTA 6 has two confirmed protagonists, Lucia and Jason, and Rockstar has not detailed how switching between them works or whether it works the same way. Expect the concept; do not assume the mechanics.

### Missions and optional objectives

GTA 5 story missions each carried a set of optional objectives — finish under a time limit, achieve a certain accuracy, take no damage — that awarded a gold medal when all were met. These could be pursued on a replay, so there was no reason to restart a mission repeatedly on a first playthrough. If GTA 6 keeps that design, the correct beginner advice is the same: play the story through once for the story, and clean up medals afterwards.

### Money

Story-mode money in GTA 5 came overwhelmingly from a small number of scripted heists rather than from grinding, and the game deliberately gave you very little until the story handed it to you. See the [money hub](https://gta6intelhub.com/money) for how that worked in detail, including the stock-market strategy that dwarfed every other method.

## What we are not going to tell you yet

- The control scheme. It has not been shown in enough detail to transcribe honestly.
- Which settings to change first. That requires having seen the settings menu.
- How long the opening takes, or when the full map unlocks.
- Whether there is a difficulty option, an aim-assist mode range, or a photo mode.
- Anything about GTA Online’s successor, which Rockstar has not detailed.

Each of those becomes a real answer within a day or two of launch, and this page gets rewritten around them.

## What lands here on launch day

19 Nov 2026

GTA 6 releases on 19 November 2026. This page is already live so that it is indexed and established before then. Within the first days after release it is replaced with the real thing:

1. The real first-hour route: what the opening actually is, how long the tutorial section runs, and when the map opens up.
2. Settings to change before you play — camera, aiming mode, subtitles, performance mode — with our reasoning for each.
3. The controls, verified on both PS5 and Xbox, including the ones the game does not tell you about.
4. Early mistakes that cost you time or money, written after we have made them.
5. What is safe to ignore early and what is worth doing immediately.

Nothing above is published until someone here has verified it in-game or Rockstar has stated it. If that takes longer than a day, the page says so rather than filling the gap with guesses. See [how we verify](https://gta6intelhub.com/editorial-policy).

## Frequently asked

**Do I need to play GTA 5 before GTA 6?**

No. Rockstar has never required prior games to follow a mainline GTA story, and GTA 6 has a new setting and new protagonists in Lucia and Jason. Playing GTA 5 is useful for learning the series conventions — the wanted system, the mission structure, the general feel of driving and shooting — but it is not a prerequisite for the story.

**What platforms is GTA 6 on?**

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version alongside the console release, which matches how GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 were handled — both came to PC well after their console launches.

**Is GTA 6 a good first Grand Theft Auto game?**

Almost certainly yes, on the pattern of every previous entry. GTA games open with a low-pressure introductory sequence that teaches driving, shooting and the wanted system before the story escalates. That said, we cannot review a game nobody has played — this is expectation from precedent, not an assessment of GTA 6.

**What should I do before GTA 6 launches?**

Free up storage well ahead of time, make sure your console firmware and account are in order, and if you preorder, preload as soon as the download unlocks rather than on launch morning when the servers are busiest. Beyond that there is nothing to prepare — GTA games do not require prior knowledge.

**Will there be difficulty settings in GTA 6?**

Unknown. GTA 5 had no difficulty selector in story mode; the difficulty came from mission design and from optional gold-medal objectives. Whether GTA 6 changes that has not been stated.
