# GTA 6 gameplay: what Rockstar has actually demonstrated

Rockstar has shown roughly half an hour of GTA 6 gameplay. Here is every mechanic it demonstrated: police, combat, carjacking and character switching.

**GTA 6 plays like Grand Theft Auto with almost every surrounding system rebuilt.** The crime is still the crime: you shoot, drive, rob and run. What has changed is everything that reacts to it — police who need a witness before they respond, cars that need the right tool before they open, a partner who has their own day when you are not controlling them, and a hidden profile that records how you behave when nobody set you a mission.

Everything below comes from two things that happened on 27 August 2026: Rockstar's own *Extended Look*, and the hands-off previews published by outlets and creators flown to Rockstar North in Edinburgh. Where a detail came from a preview rather than from footage, we say so.

## What has Rockstar actually shown of GTA 6 gameplay?

One video. *Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look* premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on 27 August 2026 and reached YouTube six hours later. Rockstar describes it as captured entirely from in-game footage on a PlayStation 5, and it runs somewhere between 26 and 30 minutes depending on whose count you take.

That video is the only official gameplay. The much larger body of detail circulating since comes from the Rockstar North previews, where journalists and YouTubers watched the game being played by developers and asked questions. Those are credible but second-hand, and none of them involved anyone holding a controller.

## How do the police and wanted level work?

This is the deepest change. Six stars are back after GTA 5 capped heat at five, and the system beneath them is new.

Police no longer materialise because the game knows you did something. Somebody has to see the crime, or a security system has to catch it. When a call goes in, responding officers are given a description of what happened and who might be responsible — and icons under the wanted meter tell you exactly which pieces of information they hold.

| What police know | How you clear it |
| --- | --- |
| Your face | Wear a mask during the crime and dump it during the getaway |
| Your physical description | Visit a barber and change your hair |
| Your clothing | Change into a completely different outfit — a hat or glasses is not enough |
| Your vehicle | Abandon the car and take another |
| Nothing confirmed | Outlined stars: they are searching without a description |

Escaping does not end the investigation. The scene stays an active police zone while officers sweep the area, and outrunning one star is meant to be easy while six triggers an all-out manhunt. Because Vice City has tight streets and heavy traffic, previews say three stars or more is meaningfully harder there than it would be in Los Santos. Rockstar has also rebuilt sprinting, vaulting and climbing so that ditching the car and going on foot is a real option.

The two-protagonist structure feeds into it. If police realise both Jason and Lucia are involved, splitting up forces them to divide resources; you can send your partner clear and stay behind to absorb the chase, and they will message you once they are safe. One of the pair can be busted while the other stays loose.

## What is the Criminal Profile?

Rockstar's replacement for Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor meter, and it is explicitly not a good/evil slider. The Criminal Profile is a persistent record of how you behave in free roam. Gratuitous violence and destruction feed it. So do surprisingly mundane things — Rockstar cited putting rubbish in a bin. Pulling off robberies cleanly builds your reputation as a competent criminal.

Patterns of behaviour change how Leonida's residents treat Jason and Lucia, and previews say the profile can affect how parts of the story develop. Violence a mission demands of you does not count against it.

## How does combat work?

Third-person, cover-based, free-aim, and closer to a modern shooter than GTA 5's lock-on. The additions worth knowing:

- **Non-lethal options.** Shooting an enemy in an arm or leg takes them out of the fight without killing them. Accurate players can shoot the weapon out of an enemy's hands.
- **A vitals targeting layer.** Slow-motion aiming highlights weak points, with red markers for lethal hits and yellow for non-lethal.
- **Faster weapon handling.** You can swap between two carried firearms without the weapon wheel, pick guns up faster, and carry one-handed.
- **Concealment.** Guns can be holstered and hidden, and walking down a street openly carrying a rifle is something the world will react to.
- **Cinematic kills.** Particularly clean sequences trigger RDR2-style slow-motion camera work.

There is no full first-person mode at launch. Nelson told Davy Jones the team put its effort into third-person animation instead; first-person aiming with certain weapons survives. GTA 5's first-person mode also arrived a year after launch rather than with it, so this is precedent rather than surprise.

## Is stealing cars different?

For the first time in the series, yes — meaningfully. Parked vehicles are sorted into security tiers. A phone app called WAINK scans a car before you commit and reports its estimated value, lock status, alarm and whether it carries a tracker.

Older cars open with a slim jim, played as a timed minigame. Modern luxury cars need key cloners, and some cannot be taken at all until story progress unlocks the equipment. Certain vehicles carry GPS trackers that report you to police unless you outrun the signal or dump the car. Classic carjacking — pulling a driver out of an occupied vehicle — still works exactly as it always has.

Stolen cars are sold to fences, and damage cuts the price. Vehicle fences also tip you off about valuable cars sitting in places like police impound lots.

## What do Jason and Lucia do when you are not playing them?

Switching is instant when the pair are together and uses a GTA 5-style transition when they are apart. Outside missions they keep their own schedules, and you may get casual texts about what they are up to or what needs handling at home. Ignoring those repeatedly is said to strain the relationship.

You can call the other character to come and join you. Sharing a vehicle, you can move between seats and hand over driving, which lets one of them shoot while the other escapes. Missions can be played from either side, and some can be completed together or separately.

The romance between them is optional and, per Rockstar, deliberately carries no mechanical reward. It is a roleplaying choice, not a stat unlock.

## What else does the world do?

- **Bodies change.** Working out visibly builds muscle; overeating adds weight. Long stretches without sleep, or extended police pursuits, take a visible toll.
- **The phone is a physical object,** held in the character's hand with the camera moving in, rather than a HUD overlay. Snapmatic returns as a social feed you can read but not post to — Jason and Lucia are fugitives avoiding a digital trail.
- **NPCs are individually art-directed** rather than procedurally assembled, with animations that adapt to body size. You can greet, taunt, provoke or defuse them, and some are armed and will start something themselves.
- **Money matters more.** Previews say the campaign can gate progress behind raising a specific sum, earned through car theft, store hold-ups and bank jobs.
- **Safehouses are shared and lived-in,** closer to RDR2's camps than to GTA 5's static properties, and cars have usable boots for stashing weapons and a change of clothes.
- **The minimap renders 3D building geometry** and satellite-style detail rather than flat road lines.

And there are no microtransactions. Nelson answered the Kinda Funny team directly — "no monetization" — and said no generative AI was used in development. That covers the single-player game shipping on 19 November. It tells you nothing about whatever online mode follows.

## What we still do not know

Rockstar has not detailed mission structure beyond a chapter-based framework, has not confirmed resolution or ray tracing settings, has not shown a heist in full, and has said nothing about what happens after the credits. Nobody outside Rockstar has played the game. Every mechanic above was watched, not held.

## Frequently asked questions

These pairs are published on the page itself and are the answers this guide is most often asked for. The tier above applies to them.

**Q: Has Rockstar shown GTA 6 gameplay?**

A: Yes. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026 and on YouTube six hours later. It runs roughly half an hour and Rockstar says it was captured entirely from in-game footage on a PlayStation 5. It is the first official gameplay footage of GTA 6.

**Q: Does GTA 6 have a first-person mode?**

A: Not a full one at launch. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told YouTuber Davy Jones that GTA 6 will not ship with a complete first-person mode because the team focused on third-person animation, though you can still aim down sights in first person with certain weapons.

**Q: How does character switching work in GTA 6?**

A: When Jason and Lucia are together, switching is instant. When they are apart, you get a GTA 5-style camera transition. Outside missions the other character carries on with their own schedule and may text you about it.

**Q: Is stealing cars harder in GTA 6?**

A: Yes. Vehicles are tiered by security. Older cars can be opened with a slim jim minigame, while modern luxury cars need key-cloning equipment that is unlocked through story progress. A phone app called WAINK scans a car for its value, lock status, alarm and tracker before you try.

**Q: Does GTA 6 have microtransactions?**

A: No. Rob Nelson told the Kinda Funny team there is 'no monetization' in the single-player game, and that no generative AI was used in development. That answer covers the game shipping on November 19 and says nothing about a future online mode.
