Rockstar premiered *Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look* on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday 27 August 2026, and put it on YouTube and the official GTA VI site six hours later at 9 p.m. ET. It is roughly half an hour of uncut in-game footage — Rockstar says it was "captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5" — and it is the first real gameplay the public has seen after two trailers and nearly three years of waiting.

The short version: this is still Grand Theft Auto, but the systems around the crime have been rebuilt. Wanted levels, police AI, aiming, character switching and the relationship between the two protagonists all work differently than they did in GTA 5.

## How long was the GTA 6 Extended Look?

Netflix's own listing put the runtime at 26 minutes before it aired. VGC, watching it live, described it as running "just over 30 minutes." Treat "about half an hour" as the safe answer — Rockstar never published an official runtime, and the YouTube cut may not match the Netflix listing exactly.

## What the Extended Look confirmed

These are the things Rockstar showed on screen, not things people inferred afterwards.

| System | What was shown |
| --- | --- |
| Wanted level | Six stars are back. The sixth star was absent from GTA 5. |
| Police tracking | Cops no longer appear individually on the minimap. A search circle shows roughly where they are hunting you. |
| Police descriptions | Icons under the star rating indicate whether police know your face, clothing and whether you are armed. Changing clothes or a mask lowers heat. |
| Aiming | Free-aim, cover-based shooting throughout, closer to a modern third-person shooter than GTA 5's lock-on. |
| Bullet time | A Dead Eye-style slow-motion mode with highlighted weak points on enemies — head, hands, joints. |
| Character switching | Instant when Jason and Lucia are together; a GTA 5-style transition when they are apart. |
| Missions | Playable as either protagonist, and completable together or separately. |
| Minimap | Renders 3D building geometry as you pass. |
| Karma | Petting a dog earns positive karma; fleeing a store robbery cost Lucia negative karma. |
| Criminal Profile | A persistent profile built from your free-roam behaviour, nudged by consistent actions. |

The demo opened on a drug deal going wrong, then followed Jason into Lucia's apartment — raiding the fridge, choosing a beer, sitting through full-screen in-world TV commercials while she got ready. Kotaku noted the sequence at an apartment building where the pair are looking for someone named Boobie.

Beyond the missions, Rockstar cut through a spread of side content: fan boats through the Everglades-style wetlands, kayaks, jet skis, scuba diving, dirt bike and track racing, weight training, parachuting off a Vice City tower, and a two-person store robbery where one player robs and the other drives. One clip showed Lucia driving past an influencer live-streaming from a car, with the stream chat rendered on screen.

## What Rockstar did not say

The Extended Look ended by reconfirming 19 November 2026 and nothing else. There was no PC announcement, no online mode, no file size, no pricing update, and no mention of a PS5 Pro-specific mode. Two significant technical facts — the 30fps cap and the map size — came from Rockstar developers speaking to visiting YouTubers in the days around the premiere, not from the video itself.

## Why Netflix

Rockstar struck what it called a first-of-its-kind partnership with Netflix, giving subscribers a six-hour exclusivity window before the general release. The commercial logic is straightforward: Netflix reaches an audience that does not watch game trailers, and GTA 6 is being positioned as a mainstream entertainment event rather than a games-press one.

The premiere also came a day after Rockstar publicly addressed a week of gameplay leaks, calling them "heartbreaking for our team" and apologising for how long the official reveal had taken. The Extended Look was, in part, Rockstar reclaiming the narrative from a leaker.

GTA 6 releases for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026.
