GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional Florida, built around a modern-day Vice City. Six regions have been officially revealed: Vice City, Mount Kalaga National Park, Grassrivers, Leonida Keys, Ambrosia and Port Gellhorn. Rockstar’s own story synopsis puts it plainly — Jason and Lucia are caught “in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.”

The map is not a city with a countryside attached. It is a state, with a major metropolis, a national park on the northern border, wetlands, a chain of keys and two struggling towns that read as very deliberate social commentary.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Rob Nelson, Rockstar’s head of development, gave a set of comparisons to YouTuber TGG during a studio visit ahead of the Extended Look premiere:

Comparison Nelson’s figure
GTA 6 world vs GTA 5 world ~2x
GTA 6 world vs Red Dead Redemption 2 world ~3x
Vice City vs Los Santos ~2x
Vice City + suburbs vs Los Santos + surroundings ~11x

Treat these as credible developer statements, not surveyed measurements. They came from a Rockstar developer via a visiting creator, not from a Newswire post, and no methodology was published. The eleven-times figure is the one that actually matters: it is a claim about dense, built-up, walkable space, which is the expensive part of any open world.

The six confirmed regions

Vice City

Inspired by Miami, and the anchor of the whole map. Named locations include Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Vice City Port, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and Vice City International Airport. Trailer footage has nodded back to the original 2002 game’s Ocean View Hotel.

Rockstar’s framing is that the neon-soaked 1980s are long gone and what is left is excess without the glamour — Cuban influence, bootleg brands, beaches and cruise ships. The Extended Look leaned into density: a nightclub so crowded Jason has to physically weave through bodies, streets thick with NPCs, and full-screen in-world TV commercials playing in an apartment.

Two Vice City shops are confirmed but Ultimate Edition only: Rideout Customs (vehicle customisation, donk styling) and Sara’s Unisex Salon (hair, facial hair, makeup, nails).

Mount Kalaga National Park

The northern border of the state. Rockstar says it “offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails” — which is a description of the terrain, not a confirmation that hunting and fishing are playable systems. The area is characterised as home to backwoods eccentrics: PC Gamer’s coverage describes hillbilly mystics and people convinced the government is coming for them.

The Ultimate Edition’s ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy is explicitly pitched as a Mount Kalaga off-road machine.

Grassrivers

The Everglades analogue. Alligators are everywhere in Rockstar’s own screenshots, and the official description promises “deadlier predators and weirder discoveries” beyond them. The Extended Look showed a fan boat crossing this kind of terrain, plus kayaks on open water.

Paradise Garage in Watson Bay sits in this part of the map — an Ultimate Edition garage with a weapon locker and a place to fence stolen goods.

Leonida Keys

The Florida Keys stand-in south of the city. Rockstar calls the waters here “some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America,” and at least one official screenshot has a shark in it. The Keys are also part of the backstory Rockstar has given supporting character Brian Heder, described as “a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys.”

Nearby, in the Stockyard area: Stock 305 (streetwear), Electric Fang Tattoo (50+ designs by the artist collective FAILE), and One-Eyed Willie’s, a Lake Leonida mod shop specialising in off-road builds and hand-painted work. All three are Ultimate Edition.

Ambrosia

A company town. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery is the employer; the Final Chapter biker gang, per Rockstar, “provides almost everything else.” Rockstar describes Ambrosia as where “the battle for health and wealth” in Leonida begins.

Port Gellhorn

Described by Rockstar as Leonida’s forgotten coast — a dead vacation town of cheap motels, shuttered attractions and empty strip malls, where the growth industries are drugs, alcohol and energy drinks.

What is confirmed vs what the community has pieced together

This distinction matters more on the map than anywhere else, because the fan-mapping effort is genuinely impressive and genuinely unofficial.

Confirmed by Rockstar: the six region names, their descriptions, the named Vice City districts and landmarks above, and the shop and garage locations disclosed with the Ultimate Edition contents.

Not confirmed: the map’s shape, its scale in square kilometres, the number of airports, whether Leonida is an island, and every fan-drawn boundary. A large GTAForums thread has been assembling Vice City street-by-street from trailer frames and Panama City Street View, and an August 2026 leak included a purported map depicting Leonida as an island rather than a state with a panhandle. That leak is unverified and we are not treating it as fact.

Our position on leaked maps: we will not publish a leaked map image or treat leaked geography as confirmed. When Rockstar publishes the map — historically that happens at or just before launch, in the game’s own manual and on the official site — we will document it.

What the Extended Look told us about traversal

The demo showed, on screen: driving, a fan boat, kayaks, jet skis, dirt bikes, track racing, scuba diving and parachuting off a Vice City tower with the draw distance on full display. Character switching is instant when Jason and Lucia are together and takes a few seconds when they are apart, which implies a map large enough for that distinction to cost something.

The minimap now renders 3D building geometry as you pass, and police no longer appear on it individually — a search circle shows roughly where they are hunting, and you need the Focus mechanic to spot them.

Still unknown

  • Total map area in real units
  • Whether Leonida includes a panhandle or is a self-contained landmass
  • How many interiors are enterable outside missions
  • Whether hunting and fishing are actual systems or scenery
  • The full district list for Vice City
  • Any underwater, subway or airport interior detail

We update this page as Rockstar confirms things, and we date every claim.
