GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 on 19 November 2026, running at 30fps, with DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D AudioTech and a PS5 Pro Enhanced tag whose contents Rockstar has never explained. Sony’s own line, from the PlayStation Blog: Grand Theft Auto VI “will play best on PS5.”
The Extended Look Rockstar premiered on 27 August 2026 was captured on a base PS5, so PlayStation owners have effectively already seen what they are buying — which is more than can currently be said for any other platform.

What PS5 features does GTA 6 actually use?
Sony detailed these in a PlayStation Blog post on 24 June 2026, written by SIE marketing SVP Mary Yee. They are Sony’s claims about its own hardware, which makes them about as authoritative as pre-release feature lists get:
- DualSense haptics — “responsive vibrations” tied to on-screen action.
- Adaptive triggers — “dynamic resistance”, the mechanic most commonly used for weapon triggers and braking.
- The controller speaker — Sony says it “adds another dimension to key moments and interactions”, with controller sound effects reinforced by haptics.
- Tempest 3D AudioTech — positional audio across “the distinct soundscapes of Leonida.”
- The SSD — “near-instant load times” across the open world.
Note what is described and what is not. Sony names the features; it does not say what any of them do in a specific situation. There is no published example of an adaptive trigger behaviour in GTA 6, and Rockstar has not demonstrated one.
What does PS5 Pro Enhanced mean for GTA 6?
It means a badge exists. It does not currently mean anything more specific than that.
The PS5 Pro Enhanced tag appeared on the game’s PlayStation Store listing as pre-orders went live on 25 June 2026, and Sony’s blog post mentions the Pro. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has published what the enhancements are — no resolution target, no ray-tracing uplift, no frame rate mode, no PSSR confirmation.
Digital Foundry’s analysis of the Extended Look footage adds useful context here, because that footage was base PS5 rather than Pro. Its read: the game renders internally at 1440p on base PS5 without dynamic resolution scaling, with the output reading as a spatial upscale to 4K rather than a modern temporal one. The Pro’s extra GPU power and PSSR upscaling are the obvious places to spend a Pro budget, and that is what most analysts expect — but expecting is not confirming, and Rockstar has shown no Pro footage.
Will GTA 6 run at 60fps on PS5 or PS5 Pro?
Almost certainly not at launch, and possibly never on this hardware.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s head of development, told visiting creator Davy Jones that during this development period the consoles run the game at 30fps, and that whether a 60fps option exists at launch is still a question for the technical team. He did not have resolution or ray-tracing details to give.
Digital Foundry went further after analysing the footage. Its assessment: the game holds a “relatively stable and well-paced 30FPS output, with only very occasional single frame drops,” and Rockstar has “spent immense effort balancing CPU and GPU workloads to fully saturate the hardware.” Its conclusion is blunt — “a 60fps version extremely unlikely on console hardware — there’s no way to regain enough GPU and particularly CPU time to make a 16.7ms update rate work without compromising the world.”
The bottleneck is CPU-side world simulation, which is the part a PS5 Pro does not meaningfully improve. A 40fps mode on a 120Hz display is a possibility people have floated; Rockstar has not confirmed one. Our 30fps explainer goes deeper on the technical picture.
Is GTA 6 a PlayStation exclusive?
No, and the confusion is deliberate on Sony’s part.
GTA 6 launches simultaneously on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. What Sony holds is a marketing arrangement. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported in May 2026 that Zelnick, asked about the console-only launch, said the window of console exclusivity was not related to Take-Two’s marketing deal with Sony — a statement that both confirms the deal exists and denies it shapes the platform list.
The practical effect is that PlayStation branding sits at the end of the trailers, the store takeover is enormous, and Rockstar’s own promotional posts frequently name PS5 without naming Xbox. None of that changes what Xbox owners get on 19 November. Our GTA 6 on Xbox guide covers that side.
What do PS5 pre-orders include?
Two things, and there is a small discrepancy in how they have been described.
The Vintage Vice City Pack is uncontroversial: Take-Two’s press release states that all pre-orders and purchases made before 20 November 2026 include it.
The free month of GTA+ is where the wording diverges. Sony’s blog post says “players who pre-order any edition on PlayStation Store will also receive a redeemable free month of GTA+”, framing it as a PS Store perk. Take-Two’s press release describes it more broadly as accompanying “digital pre-orders” without restricting it to a platform. The Take-Two wording is the one to trust for scope — it is the publisher’s own investor-facing release — but if you are pre-ordering on PS5 specifically, both sources agree you get it.
GTA+ is a GTA Online subscription. It grants access to the GTA+ Games Library, including GTA 5 and other classic Rockstar titles, and is redeemable immediately rather than at GTA 6’s launch.
Anything else PS5 owners should know
- There is no disc. Physical copies ship on 12 November and contain a download code in the box, which is why they arrive a week early — they exist to support pre-loading. See our pre-load explainer.
- No install size has been announced, on PS5 or anywhere else, so leave headroom.
- There is no full first-person mode at launch. Nelson confirmed Rockstar focused on third-person animation; first-person aiming with certain weapons survives.
- No unlock time has been announced. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 unlocks at midnight local or at a single global moment.
