GTA 6 returns to Vice City, and Rockstar says the city alone is twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos. It is not the whole map — Vice City sits inside the larger fictional state of Leonida — but it is the centre of gravity, and it is the reason the game exists in the form it does.
Rockstar’s own framing on the Grand Theft Auto VI site is a single line: “Vice City, USA. The darkest side of the sunniest place in America.”
How big is Vice City in GTA 6?
The only figures anyone has come from Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s head of development, given verbally to YouTuber TGG during a three-hour preview session at the studio and reported by both PC Gamer and Kotaku on 27 August 2026:
“The map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map. Three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos, and Vice City and its surrounding suburbs is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings.”
Two caveats matter. First, these are ratios, not measurements — Rockstar has never published a square-kilometre figure for any GTA map, and it has not published one here. Second, the eleven-times comparison is doing something different from the others: it counts populated area rather than raw landmass, which is why it is so much larger than the “twice the size” figure for the city proper. Anyone quoting “11x bigger” without that qualifier is misreading it.
| Comparison | Rockstar’s stated ratio |
|---|---|
| Whole Leonida map vs GTA 5 | 2x |
| Whole Leonida map vs Red Dead Redemption 2 | 3x |
| Vice City vs Los Santos | 2x |
| Vice City + suburbs vs Los Santos + surroundings | 11x |
Is Vice City the whole GTA 6 map?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about the setting. Rockstar’s official Only in Leonida page divides the state into six touring destinations: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Vice City is one of them.
That structure matters for how the game reads. Jason’s official bio places him in the Keys working for drug runners; Brian Heder runs a boat yard down there. The Extended Look showed airboats through wetlands, kayaks, scuba diving, dirt bike racing and a zoo — none of that is metropolitan Miami. Vice City is the dense urban core of a state that also contains swamp, coast and highland.

Is Vice City based on Miami?
Yes, and Rockstar has been unusually specific about the work behind it. Nelson told Dazed that the team spent years on the ground in Miami and the surrounding areas researching the game, and that Rockstar met club promoters, law enforcement officers, ex-criminals and gun dealers to build out the world.
Some of the more concrete results of that research:
- Over 50 real street artists were brought in to design murals that appear in the game.
- A Miami-based stylist, Jillian Carr, has worked with Rockstar since 2023 building what Rockstar calls a fashion ecosystem for the city.
- Vehicle handling was tuned by a team that includes actual race-car drivers.
- Rockstar’s Los Angeles office was dedicated solely to NPC work, producing a population Rockstar describes as its most detailed and varied ever.
Carr’s description of the city to Dazed is the sharpest summary of what Rockstar is going for: “Vice City is built around vanity. Between social media, celebrity culture, and a constant flow of tourists, appearances carry significant weight, and trend cycles turn over quickly.”
That is not just texture. Nelson has said how Jason and Lucia look will carry weight in how the city treats them, and previews confirm their physiques visibly change with diet and exercise.
How is this Vice City different from the 2002 game?
The same fictional city, rebuilt from nothing and moved forward roughly forty years.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) and Vice City Stories (2006) were both period pieces set in the 1980s, built on the pastel-and-cocaine imagery of that decade. GTA 6 is contemporary. The Extended Look’s Vice City is a city of smartphones, live-streamers, rideshare apps and an in-world Instagram parody called Snapmatic — one clip showed Lucia driving past an influencer streaming from a car, with the chat rendered on screen.
The one gesture back to the old version is commercial rather than diegetic: the Vintage Vice City Pack, a pre-order bonus Rockstar describes as items that “flash back to when the neon burned brightest,” included with any purchase made before 20 November 2026.
What does Vice City look like to play in?
Previews are consistent about one practical consequence of the density: Vice City is a harder place to run from police than Los Santos was. Tight streets, heavy traffic and crowded pavements make a three-star chase meaningfully dangerous, and Rockstar has rebuilt sprinting, vaulting and climbing partly so that abandoning your car and cutting through alleyways is a viable escape rather than a mistake.
The same density works against you when you are moving stolen cars. Vehicle fences pay less for damaged goods, and delivering a car intact through narrow, busy streets is harder than it was across Los Santos’s wide boulevards.
Other confirmed texture from the Extended Look and previews: a rideshare app called Ryde Me, full-screen in-world television commercials, what Rockstar says is the largest collection of radio and TV advertising in series history, and a minimap that renders 3D building geometry as you pass it.
What districts does Vice City have?
Rockstar has not published a neighbourhood list, and we are not going to build one out of screenshots.
The trailers and Extended Look plainly show a beachfront strip of pastel art deco hotels, a high-rise downtown, a working port, and low-rise residential streets. Those correspond to recognisable parts of Miami, and it would be easy to write a confident-sounding list of names on that basis. Several GTA sites have. Every one of those names is inferred from footage, not confirmed by Rockstar.
When Rockstar publishes a district map — most likely at launch, as it has for previous games — we will publish it here with the names it actually uses.
What we still do not know about Vice City
- Any measurement of the map in square kilometres
- Official district or neighbourhood names
- Whether interiors are broadly enterable or gated to missions
- How much of the city is accessible from the opening hours versus unlocked through story
- What the map looks like as a whole — Rockstar has not released a full map image
